Our Story

3 min read · TALO

Talo is the Finnish word for home. It is where every trip ends. We build one case for the journey in between: a 20 inch carry-on in ribbed anodized aluminum, engineered in the United States and backed by lifetime service.

One case, one material

We do not make a collection. We make the 20" Carry-On, in aluminum, and we spend all of our attention on it. A ribbed anodized shell. TSA-approved frame latches instead of zippers. Silent spinner wheels and a machined aluminum telescoping handle. The only branding is a 48 x 13 mm engraved aluminum plate, riveted to the shell. No ink, no logos printed on fabric, nothing that rubs off. When you make one thing, every decision gets made carefully, because there is nowhere to hide a compromise.

Luggage became fashion. We disagree.

The industry sells luggage the way it sells clothing: seasonal colors, new silhouettes every year, a reason to feel like last year's bag is out of date. Underneath the marketing, most of it is a plastic shell that cracks, gets landfilled, and gets replaced. The business model depends on the bag failing or falling out of style.

We think a case should be equipment. You buy equipment once, you maintain it, and it works for decades. A good case is closer to a toolbox than a handbag. It does not need a new color each spring. It needs to close every time, roll straight, survive the cargo hold, and come home with you.

Why aluminum

Aluminum is honest. It does not pretend to be indestructible, and it does not hide its history. It dents instead of cracking, and a dent is a repair or a story, not the end of the case. The ribs in the shell exist for stiffness first and looks second. The frame latches exist because zippers are the first thing to fail on most bags. Every visible feature of the case is there because it does a job. That is also why an aluminum case ages the way a leather jacket does. It gets more yours with every trip.

The promise is the service

Anyone can call a product durable. The proof is what happens when something breaks. Our answer is lifetime service: wheels, latches, handles, and the telescoping trolley repaired, not replaced, for the life of the case, free for covered repairs. The case is designed so those parts come off and go back on, which means a broken wheel is a fixed wheel, not a landfilled bag.

That promise disciplines everything else. A company that has to repair its own cases for life cannot cut corners on the parts that break, because it will meet every one of those corners again on the workbench. Lifetime service is not a marketing line on top of the product. It is the constraint the product was engineered under.

Where we stand

Aluminum luggage is not new, and we did not invent it. Brands we respect have been building metal cases for generations, and if you are weighing your options, we wrote an honest guide to the alternatives, ours included. Our position is simple: one case, one material, engineered in the United States, priced at $349, and serviced for life. If we cannot win on those terms, we should not win.

Talo means home. The case exists to leave it and to bring your things back, over and over, for as long as you travel. That is the whole story.
